Hamilton County Opiate Abuse Statistics

Hamilton County has been affected by the opiate epidemic, which has shown itself in cases of addiction as well as overdoses and deaths. Numbers are rising in Hamilton County, just as in the rest of the country, according to the latest reports. There were 31 percent more drug overdose deaths in Hamilton County in 2017 than in 2016. Of the 529 people in 2017 who died from an overdose, 373 of them were opiate-related deaths. In Hamilton County, there were 30,000 drug-seizure cases in the county last year, which is 2.5 times higher than any other crime lab in the state. A large percentage of the drug cases in the state involved heroin and fentanyl. (Cincinnati.com)

Dangers of Opiate Abuse

The drugs most abused in Hamilton County last year were opiates, such as morphine, Fentanyl, and heroin. Street opiates today are often made in facilities around the world, and users can never be sure what ingredients are in the drugs they are abusing or the strength of the drug. These factors combine to make street opiates unpredictable and dangerous, contributing to a large number of overdose deaths.

Opiates are addictive substances, and even painkillers that are prescribed by a doctor can be abused and lead to dependence and addiction. The best way to prevent prescription painkiller addiction is to take these medications exactly as directed, and have ongoing conversations with one’s doctor about the risk of addiction and using the lowest dose necessary. Other drugs, like heroin and synthetic street opiates, are produced simply for recreational use and should be completely avoided. However, many people get hooked on prescription painkillers because they think they are harmless, and over time they switch to harder, cheaper, or easier to obtain drugs like heroin.
